"Corsets were made of fish bones"
Or whale bones? Fish do not actually have bones, but small bones or cartilage. Whalebone were not in fact the bones of the whale, considered until recently to be a fish, but the row of plates on the upper jaw that filter plankton from the sea. These plates consist of horns-like substance and are both stable and flexible, thus providing an ideal stretch for corsets, crinolines, umbrella skeletons for summer, etc.
